From child rights issues in Nepal to the creation of a working group for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to engage with the IDB, we have found success in pushing for greater accountability, transparency, and inclusion of all stakeholders at the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks.

BIC helped Joy for Children Uganda monitor a project and later file an Inspection Panel case regarding harms to children due to the project. The project helped lead to policy reform from the World Bank and others to prevent harms like this from happening again. Read more

BIC provided technical support, access to decision makers, and capacity-building for the TPO Alliance, a Nepalese CSO that was monitoring an irrigation project with cases of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harm. Read more
Opening new pathways for accountability in the MENA region
BIC took advantage of opened civic spaces after the Arab Spring and helped a CSO file a complaint with the World Bank. While the case didn't lead to all of the desired results, it did lead to a light being shone on broader systemic issues with the Bank and it's grievance mechanisms. Read more

BIC aided Lumière Synergie pour le Développement (LSD) in gaining an opportunity for advocacy with the African Development Bank, working as a bridge for the group to form their own relationship with the Bank moving forward. Read more

BIC formed a capacity-building program for CSOs to engage with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on MDB projects. The program helped bridge the gap between CSOs and the Bank, bringing the groups witnessing the effects of projects to the conversation. Read more

Forming coalitions to advocate for bank reforms
BIC initially formed a coalition in 2019 with partner CSOs across the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region to advocate together around the new safeguards review process. This advocacy led to an Environmental and Social Policy Framework (ESPF) that included over 60 recommendations made by the coalition. Since then, the coalition has remained together as the IDB Working Group, which continues to engage with the IDB and create more civic space opportunities with the Bank. Read more

Bringing organizations to the policy makers
Sustentarse is a member of the IDB Working Group that BIC has aided in gaining greater access to the IDB and policymakers in Washington, D.C. With this support, they have been able to gain greater influence at these institutions and bring communities' issues to the forefront. Read more
Advocating for more climate finance and accountability
BIC worked with other CSOs to engage MDBs on climate finance, a conversation that eventually led to the drafting of the World Bank's Evolution Roadmap. Read more
Crafting successful access to information requests
BIC was successfully able to acquire 51 previously undisclosed climate finance policy and guidance documents after multiple appeals to the Bank to receive them. These documents gave BIC and partners a greater understanding of the Bank's climate policy and also proved that proper access to information requests can provide important knowledge that would be otherwise unavailable.
